ANIMAL CONTROL

The Blackfoot Police Department Animal Control Section provides enforcement and education on animal-related issues and laws. Animal Control operates five days a week from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Monday through Friday. For information, messages, or other non-response animal control calls, telephone 785-1235. To report a violation or have an animal control officer respond, dial 785-1234

PLEASE CALL THE ANIMAL CONTROL SECTON IF:

1. You are bitten by an animal or have in your possession an animal that has bitten someone.

2.  You see a sick or injured animal, an animal needing assistance, or a dead animal. 
3.  You encounter an animal that is aggressive toward people or other animals.

4.  You suspect there is animal cruelty or neglect occurring. Examples of this type of call are: lack of food, water, adequate shelter or lack of veterinarian care.

5.  You suspect an animal has been abandoned.

6.  You see a dog, cat, or any livestock running loose.

ANIMAL SHELTER

The City of Blackfoot and Bingham County provide and maintain an animal shelter facility.  This facility enables us to temporarily house recovered cats and dogs until they can be returned to their owners.  Animals can be taken directly to the shelter located on Frontage Road or can contact the Animal Control Officer for assistance.

Required information to drop off or request Animal Control assistance:

  · Type of animal

 · Description of animal

 · Address where animal lives (if known)

  · Owner's name (if known)

 · Your information if you desire re-contact 

ANIMAL OWNERSHIP

1.  By ordinance, all animals are required to have food, water, and adequate shelter from the weather.

2.  When off your fenced property, your dog must be on a leash.

3.  Do not leave your pet in a vehicle on warm days. Heat stroke can occur in a matter of minutes.

4.  Please place a collar and ID tag on all your pets. This will aid in their return to you should they become lost.

5.  Regular veterinary care and vaccinations are essential to the health and well-being of your pet. 

DOG LICENSING

The City of Blackfoot requires that all dogs and cats display a current registration tag at all times.  Licenses can be obtained from the Blackfoot Police Department (501 N. Maple Street) or either of the Veterinary clinics.

LOST/FOUND ANIMALS

If you have lost your pet, Call 785-1235 and speak with the Animal Control Officer.

NUISANCE WILDLIFE

If you are you experiencing a problem with nuisance wildlife (skunks, raccoons, and squirrels), there are many options available to you depending on your individual situation. As a general rule, elimination of the food source and shelter will take care of the problem. Our animal control officer will assist with trapping when possible. Elk, deer and moose are big game problems that occasionally occur in our city. Call Idaho Department of Fish and Game at 232-4703.
