CRIMES AGAINST PROPERTY BURGLARY Burglary is the act of entering any structure with the intent to commit another crime, such as theft, assault, and others. To report a burglary in progress, dial 911. If the crime is not in progress call the police department at 785-1234. Do not disturb anything at the scene. To document any further property loss discovered after the initial report has been completed, you should: 1. Contact Records at 785-1235. 2. Go to the Blackfoot Police Department to file a supplemental report. AUTO THEFT Vehicle thefts should be reported as soon as possible. However, before the vehicle can be listed as stolen, you must have your vehicle's license plate number and/or the vehicle identification number (VIN). The police department may be able to assist you in accessing your license plate number. Making a report allows the needed information about your vehicle to be directly entered into the National Crime Information Center computer system. This enables law enforcement officer's anywhere in the nation to immediately identify your vehicle as being stolen. Victims can file a report at the police department or an officer can be sent to the victim's location. IF YOU RECOVER YOUR VEHICLE If you recover your vehicle, you must not touch or move it. This will help preserve possible evidence. Call the police to report the recovery because if you do not, your car will continue to be listed as stolen and you may very well be stopped by the police at gunpoint. BICYCLE THEFT Bicycles are easy targets for thieves. Be sure to lock your bicycle to a secure object at all times and have an identification number etched on your bicycle frame for easier identification. It is best if you use a driver's license number or social security number as they are easier to trace back to you. You may if you wish register your bicycle with the records division at the police department. Our department encourages the use of bike helmets for your safety. |
